Minimum Standards and Exclusions
This methodology document aims to clarify how Mirova establishes minimum standards and sector exclusions in the sustainability analysis of companies.
Mirova was created to finance economic models that aim to positively contribute to sustainable development. Much of our work is focused on attempting to identify solution providers that create positive impact, but this does not dispense us of the need to ensure that our investments always meet or exceed minimum standards including with regards to controversial activities.
Minimum standards are defined for each sector based on their key environmental and social issues and are detailed in our sectoral research papers.
This document summarizes our positions on major issues deemed controversial and illustrate the criteria we have implemented to ensure compliance with these positions in our analysis of companies. It applies to all our listed equities and fixed income portfolios.
Mirova does not exclude any industry on principle. All our positions are the result of an extensive analysis of environmental and social impacts. For certain sectors, this analysis may lead to the exclusion of all players in the sector.

Forests cover almost a third of world land surface, on a decreasing trend as reforestation notably in the West and in Asia does not compensate local deforestation, in South America and Africa. But the rationale for forest expansion is strong, and developing wood-based productions can contribute to meeting some global challenges in various ways. In this context, properly designed and well managed forest plantations should be considered in impact-oriented investment universes, to support the development of a sustainable economy.
Carbon neutrality, adaptation to climate change, preservation of biodiversity, and combating inequality: these are all complex and interconnected issues that need to be addressed in a holistic manner, rather than piecemeal. Investors wishing to participate in the transition to a fairer and more sustainable economy, will not lack for challenges the coming decades, nor should they lack opportunities to play a positive role.
Natixis Investment Managers and Mirova invite you to join a journey towards a more sustainable world. Because many opportunities arise from the most profound upheavals, Green Vision invites you to discover how players from different sectors can contribute to the transition towards a more sustainable model and revolutionise the way you think about your investments.
