A new definition for SRI
In order to raise investor awareness on Socially Responsible Investment (SRI), its promoters - AFG (Association Française de la Gestion financière) and FIR (Forum pour l’Investissement Responsable) - have suggested a sharper definition for SRI. Mirova*, member of the FIR network and playing an active role in the AFG commission dedicated to SRI, has contributed to this new definition.
Philippe Zaouati, Head of Mirova and Chairman of the AFG’s SRI Commission, explains:
“In working on a more precise definition of SRI, our aim was to answer a two-fold objective.
We wanted to offer a definition which was clear, simple and easily understood by the general public. But our aim was also to define SRI principally in terms of its objectives, rather than focusing on the means used to achieve SRI – which had been the case previously when communicating about SRI”.
According to this new definition, SRI is “an investment which aims to reconcile economic performance with social and environmental impact, by funding companies and public institutions across all sectors whose business is geared towards sustainable development. By touching on issues of governance and corporate behaviour, SRI acts as a driver for a sustainable economy.”
